India win 19 medals in World Youth Chess

India topped the medals tally with a total collection of 12 golds, three silvers and four bronzes in the World Youth Championship, which concluded at Vung Tau in Vietnam today. A day after Viswanathan Anand won the highest World title at Bonn (Germany), the splendid success of the youngsters further consolidated India`s supremacy in the 64-square game. The rich haul of 19 medals included 11 (8+1+2) in team events and eight (4+2+2) in individual events. International Master Baskar Adhiban (Chennai) won the under-16 open title as India made a clean sweep three medals in this section. National sub-junior champion SP Sethuraman (Chennai) and Orissa`s Debashis Das won the silver and bronze respectively. Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (Nasik), Sayantan Das (Kolkata) and Padmini Rout (Bhubaneswar) secured the other three individual gold medals in under-14, under-12 open and under-14 girls` categories respectively. A record 110 Indians took part in the championship, the next edition of which will be held at Turkey. Woman International Master Padmini clinched the with a round to spare and also remained undefeated in the 11-round competition. Final standings (Indians unless specified): Under 18 open: 1.
