Orissa created history by reaching Ranji Trophy semifinals for the first time today. Riding on the sterling performances of Rashmi Ranjan Parida and Pravanjan Mullick, Orissa registered seven-wicket win over host Madhya Pradesh on the last day of their five-day Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match at Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior.
This was 39th overall win in a total of 180 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and their first win in three Ranji Trophy matches against Madhya Pradesh. The historic victory assumed added significance as it was achieved in the absence of Debasis Mohanty and Shiv Sundar Das, the two Test players of the state.
Orissa won the match on the strength of its excellent performance in batting, where Parida played a major role, hitting a majestic 162 (372 balls, 19x4) in the first innings and an unbeaten 64 (150 balls, 9x4) in the second. He also passed 3000 runs in Ranji Trophy matches in the process.
Mullick played equally important role, hitting a half-century and capturing three wickets in each innings. Among others who made notable contributions for the Orissa win, stumper Gautam Gopal hit a half-century in the fitst innings and took four catches behind the wicket.
Put into bat by Orissa captain Sanjay Raul, Madhya Pradesh made a strong total of 437. In reply, Orissa compiled 479 to take a first-innings lead of 42 runs. In their second innings, the hosts were bowled out for 233. Chasing 192, Orissa romped home losing three wickets in the process.
