Maiden first-class century by allrounder Pinninti Jayachandra helped Orissa gain five points through first-innings lead against Bihar in their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match, which ended in draw on the final day at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur today.
Jayachandra hit an unbeaten 101 (188 balls, 10x4, 1x6) in the first and only innings of Orissa and gave them a lead of 186 runs. Unfortunately, three other batsmen narrowly missed out on respective century in the Orissa innings.
Among the trio, Sanjay Raul was most unlucky as he missed the mark by two runs (155 balls, 17x4). Besides Raul, captain Rashmi Ranjan Parida fell for 90 (162 balls, 11x4), while Pradip Kumar Das was dismissed for a career-best 88 (283 balls, 7x4).
Earlier in the absence of regular captain Shiv Sundar Das, who was busy playing Test cricket for India, stand-in captain Parida won the toss and opted to field. Against a well-balanced Orissa bowling attack, host Bihar rode on a half-century by Nikhilesh Ranjan and Sunil Kumar compiled a competitive total of 292.
Among Orissa bowlers, pacers Debasis Mohanty and Ajay Barik captured three wickets each, while Jayachandra picked up a brace. In reply, Orissa declared their at 478 for seven. For the visitors, both Jayachandra and Pradip Das passed respective previous highest score of 84 and 69 in first-class matches. Besides, Jayachandra and Raul passed 1500 and 3000 runs respectively in first-class matches.
Despite conceding a huge lead, Bihar managed to avaoid defeat and settled with three points eventually. When the match ended in a draw, the home team were 214 for seven in their second innings.
