Haryana achieved a sort of psychological win over Orissa by snatching away five points, via first-innings lead in their four-day Ranji Trophy Group-C Super League match, which ended in draw on the final day at Gopabandhu Stadium in Paradeep today. Despite being a stronger team on paper and playing on home conditions, Orissa settled with three points.
Orissa, of course, started well by restricting Haryana to a first-innings total of 206 after the visitors won the toss and chose to bat. As successful Orissa bowlers, left-arm spinner Jagannath Prasad Das scalped four wickets, while offie Sanjay Raul picked up three.
But Orissa failed to capitalise on their good bowling performance as they themselves folded up for 165, thus conceding a first-innings lead of 41 runs. Barring a patient 51 (151 balls, 9x4) Sanjay Raul and 39 by Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Orissa batsmen failed to live upto expectations.
After taking the crucial first-innings lead, Haryana further consolidated their grip over the match by declaring their second innings at 298 for eight and setting target of 340 for Orissa to win the match.
The home team, however, chose to play it safe, instead of going for the win. When the match ended in draw, Orissa were 210 for six in their second innings. Parida and Pravanjan Mullick were notable scorers with contributions of 49 and 38 runs respectively.
Haryana left-arm spinner Sonu Sharma emerged as the star of the match, bagging seven wickets in the first innings and two in the second. For the record, Gopabandhu Stadium became the 12th venue in Orissa to stage first-class match.
