16-Mar-1999
March 16, 1999: It was a rare instance when Orissa sent formidable Delhi on leather hunt, scoring a total of 772 runs, including four centuries in their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group-B match, which, however, ended in a draw on the last day at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.
Making mincemeat of the Delhi bowling attack, Pravanjan Mullick slammed a century in both the innings, while Shiv Sundar Das and Rashmi Ranjan Parida hit a hundred each in the first innings. Orissa also enjoyed upper hand with Debasis Mohanty bagging five wickets in the first innings.
The only thing that Orissa could not achieve was a win. However, the home team got the satisfaction of collecting five points, against three by Delhi for taking a first-innings lead of 258 runs.
Replacing Sanjay Raul as Orissa captain, Shiv Sundar Das led from the front as equalled his previous highest score of 178 (387b, 13x4). Electing to bat, host Orissa compiled a massive total of 561. During his majestic innings, Das also passed 2500 runs in first-class matches.
Mullick and Parida compounded the plight of Delhi bowlers with knocks of 113 (147b, 12x4) and 156 (326b, 14x4) respectively. In reply, Delhi were bowled out for 303. Orissa pace spearhead Debasis Mohanty did maximum damage to the Delhi innings, scalping five wickets for 67 runs.
After taking the huge first-innings lead, Orissa continued to flay the opposition bowlers with Mullick leading the onslaught and hitting an unbeaten 100 (114b, 10x4, 2x6) in the second innings. Orissa were 211 for five when the match was called off as draw.
Virender Sehwag salvaged some reputation for Delhi, hitting a stroke-filled 163 (236b, 22x4, 2x6) in their only innings. He also bagged three wickets and held five catches in the match.
