Unbeaten half-century by Devang Gandhi guided Bengal to an eight-wicket win over Orissa on the fourth and last day of their Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Permit Ground in Balasore today. This was 64th overall defeat in a total of 151 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and 30th loss in 45 matches against Bengal.
Electing to bat after captain Sanjay Raul won the toss, host Orissa were bowled out for 165 on the opening day. P Jayachandra (45) and Pravanjan Mullick (30) gave Orissa total some respectability, compiling 62 run in their second-wicket stand.
In reply, Bengal batsmen struggled against Orissa bowling attack, but managed to take 11-run lead after getting all out for 176. Among Orissa bowlers, Debasis Mohanty and Shahid Ali Khan scalped three wickets each, while Raul picked up a brace.
In the second innings, Orissa rode on a half-century by Pravanjan Mullick to make a modest total of 158. But chasing a target of 170 turned out to be easy job for Bengal, who rode on an unbeanten 78 by Gandhi to clinch victory, losing two wickets in the process. Mumbai allrounder Robin Morris made his debut for Orissa in first-class matches.
