Orissa started their Ranji Trophy 1992-93 season with a thumping win when they crushed Tripura by an innings and 126 runs on the last day of their four-day East Zone match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. This was 21st overall win in 124 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and seventh win in eight matches against Tripura.
New captain Sourajit Mohapatra and stumper Bishnu Deb Mohanty played major roles in the emphatic win, scoring an unbeaten century and bagging a total of eight wickets respectively. Riding on the sparkling knock of 100 (215b, 8x4) by Mohanty and a half-century each by Prasanta Mohapatra, Ranjib Biswal and Abakash Khatua, Orissa declared at 491 for nine after they were put into bat by Tripura captain Rajib Deb Burman.
In reply, Tripura were bundled out for 110. Mohapatra and Biswal destroyed the opposition first innings, capturing six and four wickets respectively. Forced to follow on after conceding a lead of 381 runs, Tripura fought well before folding up for 255 in the second innings. Biswal claimed three wickets to finish with a match haul of seven for 98 runs, while Mohapatra picked up a brace to return with a match haul of eight for 86. Manas Ray and Manoj Kumar Patel made first-class debut for Orissa in this match.
