Superb allround performance by Amiya Ray guided Orissa to an innings and 168-run win over Tripura on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at Ispat Stadium in Rourkela today. Ray hit a century in the only innings of the home team and followed it with a five-wicket haul in the second innings.
This was the 15th overall win in 108 first-class (all Ranji Trophy) matches for Orissa and third win in four matches against Tripura. Half-century by captain Subrata Chowdhury enabled Tripura make a modest total of 153 after they won the toss and decided to bat first.
Among successful Orissa bowlers, Sourajit Mohapatra and Mahipal Saudagar scalped three wickets each, while Rajesh Singh and Sushil Kumar Prasad picked up a brace each. In reply, Orissa declared their first-innings at 430 for eight to take a first-innings lead of 277 runs.
All 10 Orissa players who batted in the first innings, scored in double digits. Ray registered his first century in first-class cricket with the help of 11 boundaried. His 100-run knock lasted for 161 minutes. Among other leading run-gerrers of Orissa, Devashish Mahanty and Ranjib Biswal slammed a half-century each.
Tripura suffered the innings defeat as they folded up for 109 in the second innings after being forced to follow on. Sourajit Mohapatra was the second-most successful Orissa bowler in the second innings, grabbing three wickerts for 53 runs.
