Orissa and host Bengal gathered eight points each from their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match, which ended in a draw at Eden Gardens in Calcutta today. However, Orissa progressed to the quarterfinals by taking first-innings lead against Bengal.
Karun Dubey, Swapan Mitra, Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra and Anil Bhardwaj played important roles in enabling Orissa accomplish the notable feat against mighty Bengal in their own den. Half-century each by Dubey and Mitra helped Orissa compile a first-innings total of 206 after they were put into bat by Bengal captain Dilip Doshi.
Leg-break googley bowler Mohapatra then captured a career-best four for 18 as Orissa bowled out Bengal for 169 and took a crucial first-innings lead of 37 runs. Orissa further consolidated their position by declaring the second innings at 307 for seven.
The highlight of the second innings was a century each by Dubey and Bhardwaj. Dubey, in the process, passed 1000 runs in Ranji Trophy and 1500 runs in First-Class matches. Chasing near-impossible target of 345 for victory, Bengal could score 144 for two in the second innings. Orissa wicket-keeper Bishnu Deb Mohanty made his first-class debut in this match, replacing Pannalal Bose.
