Despite taking first-innings lead, Orissa lost to Bengal by two wickets on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta today. This was Orissa’s 25th defeat in 26 Ranji Trophy matches against Bengal.
Put into bat, Orissa rode on a fine knock of 77 by Rabi Narayan Panda to make 163. In reply host Benga were dismissed for 133 to concede a first-innings lead of 30 runs. Left-arm spinner Paramjit Singh and pacer Sabir Hussain did most of the damage to the Bengal innings, bagging five and four wickets respectively.
But poor batting in the second innings cost Orissa dear as they were bowled out for 104. Rabi Panda once against top scored for Orissa with 40 runs. Chasing a target of 135, Bengal lost eight wickets before accomplishing a fighting victory. Among Orissa bowlers, Paramjit Singh claimed five wickets to finish with a match haul of 10 for 92 runs. Orissa allrounder Ashok Padhy made his first-class debut in this match.
