Maiden double hundred by Ranjit Sikdar and century by captain Madan Mohan Mohanty helped host Orissa gain five points by virtue of first-innings lead against Assam in their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match, which ended in draw on the last day at Ispat Stadium in Rourkela today. Assam settled with three points.
Electing to bat, Orissa declared their first-innings at 405 for seven, thanks to sparkling knocks of 201 by Sikdar and 100 by captain Mohanty. Sikdar, thus, became the first cricketer from Orissa to score a double century in first-class cricket. He and Mohanty were associated in a 162 run partnership for the fourth wicket.
In reply, Assam rode on a century by Amal Das and a half-century by Probir Hazarika to make sizeable total of 304. Among Orissa bowlers Vinod Gupta and Kanak Patel claimed four wickets each. After taking a first-innings lead of 101 runs, Orissa were 68 for five in the second innings when the match ended in draw.
Orissa allrounder Somnath Sahoo, wicket-keeper Gautam Nag and pace bowler Sabir Hussain made their first-class debut in this match. Vinod Gupta also achieved a notable feat by completing 1000 first-class runs.
