Orissa put up good fight before losing to Bengal by 52 runs on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Calcutta Cricket and Football Ground in Calcutta today. This was Bengal’s 21st win in 22 Ranji Trophy matches against Orissa.
Bengal started the match with great confidence as they announced their first innings at 333 for seven, after being put into bat by Orissa captain Madan Mohan Mohanty. Raja Mukherjee, Ambar Roy and Nandu Chandravarkar scored a half-century each for the home team, while Sanjay Satpathy and Arun Patel claimed three wickets each for Orissa.
In reply, Orissa rode on a half-century each by Mukul Roy Chowdhury and Vinod Gupta to make 264. After taking a lead of 69 runs in the first innings, Bengal declared their second innings at 183 for one and set a challenging target of 253 for Orissa to win the match.
Accepting the challenge, the visitors made a valiant attempt to overhaul the target before being all out for 200. Arun Patel made Bengal work hard for their victory, hitting a defiant 66. Satya P Mohanty made his first-class debut for Orissa in this match.
