Orissa gained five points by virtue of taking first-innings lead against Assam in their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match, which ended in draw on the last day at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. Assam settled with three points.
Put into bat, host Orissa made 148 with Arun Patel being the top scorer with 38 runs. In reply, Assam were bowled out for 106 to concede a first-innings lead of 42 runs. Among Orissa bowlers, Patel and Sanjay Satpathy were most successful, taking three wickets each.
In the second innings, Orissa declared at 109 for five and set a challenging target of 152 runs for Assam to win the match. But the visitors were reeling at 35 for six when the match came to an end. Ashokananda Jena returned to the Orissa team for this match and replaced Arun Patel as captain. Orissa wicket-keeper S S Mishra also made a come back, in place of Vinod Pendarkar, who was dropped. Pace bowler G Shankar made his first-class debut for Orissa.
