Despite taking a 14-run first-innings lead, Orissa lost to Assam by four wickets on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. This was Orissa’s fouth defeat in 14 Ranji Trophy matches against Assam.
Host Orissa took the first-innings lead by mustering a modest total of 161 and then bowling out the opposition for 147. But second-innings batting failure cost Orissa dear as they were dismissed for 100. Chasing 115 for victory, Assam romped home, losing six wickets in the process.
Amidst the defeat, three Orissa players put up notable individual performance. Opening batsman Asit Goswami scored his first first-class half-century in the first innings, while Aditya Mohanty and debutant Babu R Rao bagged five wickets each in the first and second innings respectively. SB Pande also made his first-class debut for Orissa in this match.
