Sasanka Sekhar Patnaik and B Sridhar Alva made successful return to Orissa Senior Mens team by hitting a century each against Assam in their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match, which ended in a draw at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. Orissa, however, gained five points by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Assam settled with three points.
Lalat Indu Parija, Madan Mohan Mohanty and Haji Iqbal also made comebacks to the Orissa team. Parija led the team, replacing N N Swamy, who was dropped. Charles Stephen Hindley, D Mahapatra, R N Patra, Ashok Das and Arun Patel made their first-class debut for Orissa.
Opting to bat, Orissa declared their first innings at 377 for nine and then bowled out Assam for 134. Forced to follow on after conceding a lead of 243 runs, Assam avoided defeat by putting up strong performance in the second innings. When the match ended, they were 328 for six, thanks to a century eachy by captain Abani Hazarika and Ram Prakash Kapoor.
