Captains knock of 136 by Pankaj Roy and five wickets in each innings by Soumendranath Kundu powered Bengal to an innings and 173-run win over Orissa on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta today.
With this success, Bengal maintained their absolute dominance over Orissa, winning all the 10 Ranji Trophy matches they have played against their neighbours so far. This was also eighth time that Bengal registered innings victory over Orissa.
After putting Orissa into bat and dismissing them for 136, Bengal declared their only innings at 478 for six. Besides the century by Pankaj Roy, four other Bengal batsmen scored a half-century each. Trailing by 342 run in the first-innings, Orissa could make 169 in the second essay.
Among notable performers of the Orissa team, Suresh Mahapatra hit an unbeaten 50 in the second innings, while Bisuddhananda Jena contributed 47 and 33 in the first and second innings respectively. As many as five players made their first-class debut for Orissa. They were wicket-keeper HT Rathod, K N Patra, Gopal Bose, Kishore Patel and Sabyasachi S Mahapatra.
