Bengal hammered Orissa by an innings and 81 runs on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta today. This was the sixth innings defeat and eighth overall in eight Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa against Bengal.
Batting first, Orissa were bowled out for 174. In reply, Bengal rode on a century by Prakash Chandra Poddar and half-century eacy by Pankaj Roy, Salil Banerjee, Rajendranath Sanyal and Nemailal Roy to declare at 430 for four. In their second innings, Orissa folded up for 175. B S Alva waged a lone battle for Orissa, hitting a defiant 73 in the second innings.
