A majestic knock of 152 by Lalat Indu Parija went in vain as Orissa lost to Bengal by seven wickets in their East Zone Ranji Trophy match, held at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack from 17 to 19 January, 1953. The four-day match ended in three days.
After conceding a first-innings lead of 175 runs, host Orissa bounced back into the match to make a respectable second-innings total of 258. Parija led the fightback with his heroic knock. He was provided solid support by captain Banabasi Patnaik, who contributed 38 runs.
The fourth-wicket partnerships of 114 runs between Parija and Patnaik helped Orissa overcome the early setbacks which saw the loss of three wickets for 43 runs and the retirement of stumper P Ramayyha after getting hurt.
But the hopes of escaping defeat dwindled for Orissa as the team lost wickets in regular intervals after the departure of Patnaik and folded up for 258 eventually. Chasing 83 for victory in the second innings, Bengal romped home with a day to spare, losing three wickets in the process.
Earlier in the first innings, Orissa were bolwed out for 126, in reply to a helthy total of 301 by Bengal, who opted to bat after winning the toss. Parija also put up superb performance in bowling department, capturing six wickets for 70 runs in the first innings.
The well-contested match marked the end of first-class careers for Orissa players P Ramayyha, BV Rama Raju and Prafulla C Pantiak.
