Sultan Joh0r Cup: India settles with silver medal

India won silver medal in the 9th Sultan of Johor Cup International U-21 Hockey Tournament, which was held at Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, from 12-19 October, 2019. Great Britain emerged champions, beating India 2-1 in the final today. Other four participating countries were Australia, Japan, Malaysia and New Zealand.

The 18-member Indian Junior team featured four players from Odisha. They were: Pratap Lakra, Suman Beck, Sudeep Chirmako and Shilanand Lakra. Shilanand Lakra bagged the prize as the top goal scorer of the tournament with five goals to his name. Malaysia settled for bronze, while Japan, Australia and New Zealand finished 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.

Indian team was accompanied by chief coach BJ Kariappa and analytical coach Chris Ciriello.

The team is being captained by Mandeep Mor with Sanjay as his deputy. The team will play their remaining three league matches against Japan, Australia and Great Britain.

India (Pratap Lakra 19’, 33’, Shilanand Lakra 39’, Uttam Singh 60’) beat Malaysia (Muhammad Hassan 8’, Muhammad Zainudin 9’) 4-2.
October 13: India (Dilpreet Singh 6’, Shilanand Lakra 14’, Sanjay 17’, 22’, Mandeep Mor 20’, Suman Beck 45’, Pratap Lakra 50’, Sudeep Chirmako 51’) beat New Zealand (Dylan Thomas 28’, 44’) 8-2.
