All-India Open Karate: Odisha assert supremacy

Hosts Odisha asserted almost complete supremacy on the opening day of the 10th All-India Open Karate Championship, bagging 29 out of 31 medals at East Coast Railway Indoor Stadium here today. The 29 medals included seven gold, eight silver and 14 bronze.

The other two medals (one gold, one bronze) of the day were claimed by Jharkhand. The seven gold medals for Odisha were pocketed by Ashok Parida, Ranjit Bhuyan, Pradyumna Kumar Biswal, Sanket Kumar Nayak (all male); Salonee Lenka, Swetalaxmi Raj and Umabati Patra (all female).

Among silver medalists of Odisha, Monali Mahapatra secured two, while Ashisa Kumar Rout, Kakesh Das, Maheswar Barik, Sangram Nayak, Himanshu Sekhar Panda and  Swetalaxmi Raj picked up one each.

The 14 bronze medalists for Odisha were: Ajit Das, Amit Dakua, Sanjib Kumar Putel, Ranjan Kumar Pradhan, Ghanshyam Das, Rashmi Ranjan Roul, Siddharth Kumar Padhi, Manas Ranjan Singh, Pitabas Mansingh, Tushar Biswal (all male); Monali Mahapatra, Asma Begum, Krutimayee Nayak, Loma Swain (all female).

Odisha Higher Education Minsiter Arun Sahoo handed over the medals on the opening day. Organised by Shukokai Karate-Do Union and Utkal Karate School, the championship would concluded on August 25.
