Hockey MWC: Belgium, Netherlands thru to QFs

Olympic silver medallists Belgium and Netherlands completed the quarterfinal line up of the 14th Hockey Men’s World Cup, defeating four-time champions Pakistan 5-0 and Canada 5-0 respectively in the last two cross-over (knock-out) matches here at Kalinga Stadium Hockey Complex today.

Belgium (World Ranking: 3) raced to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter against Pakistan (WR: 13), who bowed out of the competition without a single win. Alexander Hendrickx opened the scoring with a low penalty corner before Red Lions captain Thomas Briels completed the simplest of finishes after a wonderful run along the backline from Nicolas de Kerpel.
