Asian School Chess: Odisha lass Arushi bags 5 medals

Odisha girl Arushi Srichandan bagged as many as five medals in the 14th Asian School Chess Championship, held at Hotel Citrus, Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka from July 7 to 14, 2018. The medals include two bronze in under-9 individual events and two gold and one silver in team events.

Daughter of Ajit and Sipra Srichandan of Daruthenga, Bhubaneswar, Arushi won the two individual bronze medals in rapid and blitz competitions, scoring 5.5 and six points respectively. She, however, secured two gold medals as part of the Indian team in rapid and blitz events.

But in the main event (standard format), Arushi, a Standard-IV student of DAV School, Chandrasekharpur, finished sixth with six points out of a possible nine. However, as a member of the India team, she got the silver medal in standard team event.

Five medals on international debut is surely a creditable achievement for Arushi, who takes coaching at S R Chess Centre, Sahid Nagar, Bhubaneswar. Ealier this year, she won bronze medal in the National School Chess Championship, held at KIIT University here.
