Cuttack girl Sandeepa Priyadarshini Sahoo and Puri boy Ayushman Mohanty bagged titles in the Odisha State Under-7 Chess Championship, which concluded here at Narayan School in Patia today. Sandeepa emerged champion in girls category, garnering 6.5 points out of a possible seven, while Ayushman triumphed in open category with full seven points.
Pratyasha Jena (Cuttack) and Swastik Suvam Patnaik (Cuttack) finished runner-up in girls and open categories respectively. A total of 75 players, including 25 girls from seven districts participated in the three-day championship, which was organised by Master Chess Foundation (MCF), under the aegis of All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA).
Narayan School Principal Madhusmita Mohanty inaugurated the tournament, while Council of Higher Secondary Education Secretary Pranab Mangaraj handed over the trophies in the closing function. AOCA executive member Bhabesh Mohanty, international arbiter Suresh Chandra Sahoo, MCF founder Bikram Keshari Biswal and chief arbiter Santosh Mohapatra were present on the occasion.
Top two finishers in both categories of the state championship became eligible to represent Odisha in the National Under-7 Chess Championship, scheduled to be held at Tumkur, Karnataka from July 16 to 24, 2018.
