BHUBANESWAR 04-Nov-2017
Mumbai beat host Odisha by 120 runs on the fourth and last day of their Ranji Trophy Group-C league match at KIIT Cricket Ground here today. The win fetched Mumbai six points, while Odisha drew blank. Batting failure in the first innings was the main reason for the home team’s defeat.
Put into bat, 41-time champions Mumbai rode on a century by Prithvi Shaw to make a competitive total of 289. Among Odisha bowlers, Basant Mohanty was most successful, bagging four wickets for 51 runs, while Suryakant Pradhan and Biplab Samantaray picked up a brace each. By dismissing Mumbai opener Akhil Herwadkar, Mohanty became the second Odisha bowler after Debasis Mohanty to capture 300 wickets in first-class cricket.
In reply, Odisha were bundled out for 145 with six batsmen failing to open their account. They narrowly escaped follow thanks to Biplab Samantaray’s unbeaten 72 (129 balls, 10x4), his 14th first-class fifty, and useful knocks of 36 and 28 by debutant Shantanu Mishra and Deepak Behera respectively.
After taking a first-innings lead of 144 runs, Mumbai declared their second innings at 268 for nine and set a daunting target of 413 runs for Odisha to win the match. Siddhesh Lad scored a century for the visitors in the second innings. For Odisha, Suryakant Pradhan bagged three wickets, while Basant Mohanty and Biplab Samantaray captured two apiece.
Odisha, of course, put up much better batting performance in the second innings, but it was not good enough to win the match. Despite a captain’s knock of 87 by Govinda Poddar they were all out for 292. Poddar’s 123-ball aggressive knock, which included 13 boundaries, was his 15th fifty in first-class cricket.
Poddar added 90-runs for the fifth-wicket partnership with Shantanu Mishra, missed his maiden first-class half-century by one run. Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw was adjudged the man of the match. Odisha will next meet Tamil Nadu at DRIEMS Ground, Tangi, 20kms from Cuttack, from November 9.
