Host India bagged seven medals on the opening day to make an impressive start in the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships here at Kalinga Stadium today. With a haul of two gold, one silver and four bronze, India led the medals tally, while China followed India with two gold and one silver.
Manpreet Kaur, who was also celebrating her 27th birthday, secured India’s first gold medal in the women’s shot put event. She threw the iron ball to a distance of 18.28m in her third effort – her second-best ever – taking the first place early although she had tough competition from China’s GuoTianqian, who took silver with a best of 17.91m.
