Fide Master Soumya Ranjan Mishra (Khordha) and Sarthak Debata (Rourkela) won the senior and junior titles respectively in the Cuttack District Open Chess Tournament, which concluded here at East Coast Railway Institute yesterday. Soumya received a cash prize of Rs 4,000 and Sarthak Rs 2,000.
Altogether 243 players from across the state joined the three-day tournament, which carried a total cash prize of Rs 22,500. Organised by Cuttack District Chess Association (CDCA), the tournament was inaugurated by international woman kabaddi player Jayashree Swain earlier on April 29.
All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) president Sekhar Chandra Sahu gave away the trophies and cash prizes at the closing function. East Coast Railway executives Dr Kumuda Chandra Gouda and Ashutosh Sethi; CDCA president Asit Kumar Mukherjee, secretary Ranjan Mohanty, joint-secretaries Satya Ranjan Patnaik and Tapas Mohanty, and chief arbiter Nihar Ranjan Sasmal were present on the occasion.
