Odisha registered their first win in the ongoing East Zone Vijay Merchant Trophy U-16 Cricket Tournament, trouncing A and A Team by eight wickets on the third and last day of a league match at Bidanasi Ground here today. The win fetched Odisha six points to increase their total to seven from three matches.
Resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 104 for four, the A and A Team folded up for 155 to set a victory target of 43 before host Odisha. The home team overhauled the target, losing the wickets of openers Saswat Mohanty and Manas Ranjan Nayak.
Z Kazmi with 133-ball knock of 72 was the top scorer in the second innings of the A and A Team. Among successful Odisha bowlers, Abinash Singh captured three wickets, while Satyakam Bharadwaj and Shibasish Sahoo picked up a brace each. Odisha fielders effected three run outs in the innings. Odisha will play their fourth match against Tripura at Agartala from December 19 to 21.
Earlier, Odisha took the first-innings lead of 113 runs by making a sizeable total of 285, in reply to 172 by the opposition. Shashang Rungata (97, 149b, 16x4), Manas Ranjan Nayak (50, 114b, 4x4) and Saswat Mohanty (59, 109b, 6x4) hit a century each for the home team. Rungata was unlucky to miss out on a century by three runs.
Rungata and Nayak helped Odisha overcome the early setback by stitching together 144 runs for second wicket. Shashank Verma was most successful opposition bowler, taking five wickets for 104 runs.
Earlier, opting to bat after winning the toss, the A and A Team struggled against the disciplined Odisha bowling attack and failed to put up a fifty-plus partnership for any wicket. Hem was their top scorer with 38 runs. Among successful Odisha bowlers, captain Nitish Niranjan Samantray captured three wickets for 45 runs, while Shibasish Sahoo and Satyakam Bharadwaj picked up a brace each.
