Batting failure cost Odisha dear as they suffered an innings and one-run defeat at the hands of Punjab on the penultimate day of their four-day Cooch Behar Trophy U-19 Group-C league match at Vikash Ground here today.
Resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 75 for one and needing another 58 runs to avoid innings defeat, host Odisha lost their remaining nine wickets for 56 runs to be bowled out for 131. R Bhagat and Mayank Markande destroyed the Odisha second innings, bagging five and four wickets respectively. Bhagat, who captured seven wickets in the first innings, finished with a match haul of 12 wickets for 120 runs.
The emphatic win fetched Punjab seven points, while Odisha drew blank. This was the third defeat in five matches for Odisha, who now occupy the fifth position in the group table with eight points in their account. Odisha will play their last league match against Vidarbha at Nagpur from December 19 to 22.
Earlier, in reply to a modest first-innings total of 142 by Odisha, Punjab folded up for 274. Captain Anmolpreet Singh and Mayank Sidhu hit a half-century each to rescue Punjab from troubled waters. Odisha captain Satyajit Sabat was most successful bowler for his team, taking three wickets for 15 runs.
Earlier on the opening day, as many as 16 wickets tumbled as host Odisha fought back to reduced Punjab to 95 for six after making a modest first-innings total of 142. Put into bat by Punjab captain Anmolpreet Singh, Odisha found opposition pace bowler R Bhagat too hot to handle and lost wickets in regular intervals. Barring opener Swastik Samal and captain Satyajit Sabat, who scored 35 and 28 respectively, no other Odisha bastman could make a notable contribution. Bhagat did maximum damage to the Odisha innings, bagging seven wickets for 57 runs.
