Despite second-innings fifty each by Abinash Singh and Saswat Mohanty, host Odisha suffered a 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Jharkhand on the third and last day of their Vijay Merchant Trophy East Zone U-16 match at BOSE Ground here today. The win fetched Jharkhand 7 points, while Odisha drew blank.
Following on after conceding a first-innings lead of 189 runs and resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 103 for 3, Odisha were all out for 207 to set a mini target of 19 for the opposition to win the match. Jharkhand overhauled the target without losing any wicket.
Pankaj Yadav destroyed the Odisha second innings, bagging seven wickets, including three in one over. Abinash Singh was the top scorer for Odisha with a 117-ball 64, which included 11 fours and 2 sixes. Saswat Mohanty contributed 57, which came off 135 balls and included 12 boundaries.
This was the first defeat in two matches for Odisha, who will play their third league match against North East at Cuttack from December 13 to 15. Earlier, batting first, Jharkhand were mustered a healthy total of 303, thanks to a half-century each by Harshit Namdev and Kumar Kushagra. Among successful Odisha bowlers, Satyakam Bharadwaj and Shibasish Sahoo took 3 wickets each, while captain Nitish Samantray picked up a brace.
In reply, Odisha were dismissed for a disappointing total of 114. Suman Kumar Das was the only Odisha batsman to get a notable score of 49, which included 6 boundaries and 1 six. Sushant Mishra was most successful Jharkhand bowler, bagging 5 wickets for 32 runs. But in the second innings, Odisha boys put up improved performance thanks to 71-run partnership for the third wickets between Shashang Rungta and Saswat Mohanty.
