Balasore Sports Hostel emerged champions in the 10th Biju Gold Cup U-15 Football Tournament, defeating Nayagarh Sports Hostel in the final by 5-4 goals, via tie-breaker here at Unit-VI High School Ground today. Tie-break rule was applied after play in regulation time ended in goalless draw.
Balasore boys Raisan Tudu, Sanjay Hembram, Saibram Hansdah bagged the prizes as Player of the Tournament, Best Goalkeeper and Best Mid-fielder respectively. Nayagarh trio of Pintu Samal, D Sanjay and Sameer Kerketta pocketed the prizes as Best Defender, Best Striker and Player of the Tournament respectively.
Former Minister and tournament committee chairman Padmanav Behera and Boyanika president Shesha Kumar Meher handed over the trophy and prizes in the presence of Unit-VI Athletic Association president Tapan Mohanty, secretary Dilip Das and Angul-Sukinda Railway Project MD Dilip Samantray.
Earlier, in the semifinals, Balasore Sports Hostel beat Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) 5-3 via tie-breaker, while Nayagarh Sports Hostel got the better of Keonjhar Sports Hostel 5-4 also in penalty shoot out. Urmila Football Academy held Cuttack SAI Training Centre to 1-1 draw in a women’s exhibition match, which took place before the final match.
The tournament was organised by Unit-VI Athletic Association from December 9. The under-15 tournament, featuring 10 teams, was inaugurated by Padmanav Behera amidst cultural show. Sports Minister Sudam Marndi, Bhubaneswar Central MLA Bijay Kumar Mohanty and office-bearers of Unit-VI Athletic Association were present on the occasion.
According to Padmanav Behera, a budget of Rs 6 lakh has been estimated for the smooth conduct of the tournament. State Sports & Youth Services Department, Tata Steel and Odisha Mining Corporation provided financial assistance for the event.

Dec 9 (Match No 2): Nayagarh Sports Hostel (D Sanjay 22, 52; Samir Kerketta 27) beat Kalinga Bidyapitha (Rakesh Nayak 40) 3-1. MoM: Samir Kerketta.
Dec 9 (Match No 3): KISS (Deepak Barad) beat Sundargarh Sports Hostel 1-0. MoM: Deepak Barad.
