After conceding a first-innings lead of 122 runs, Odisha fought back with determination to hold Vidarbha to a draw in their opening Group-B Ranji Trophy match at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag today. However, Vidarbha gained three points by taking the first-innings lead, while Odisha settled with one point.
Electing to bat on the neutral venue, Odisha were in deep trouble, losing four wickets for 49 runs. Though a 59-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Biplab Samantray and Subhranshu Senapati enabled them make partial recovery, efforts to compile a sizeable total proved in vain as Odisha lost their last six wickets for 42 runs. Samantray was the top scorer with 53 runs.
In reply, Vidarbha rode on a captains knock of 99 by F Fazal and a half-century by Ganesh Satish to declare their first innings at 272 for six. Medium-pacer Deepak Behera was most successful Odisha bowler, picking up three wickets for 35 runs.
After their below-par performance in the first innings, Odisha displayed much improved batting in the second essay. New openers Sandeep Pattanaik and Ranjit Singh gave them a sound start, stitching together 78 runs, while captain Gobinda Poddar consolidated the innings with a half-century. After Odisha declared their second innings at 274 for nine, the match ended in a draw.
Vidarbha captain Fazal was adjudged man of the match. Odisha will play their next Ranji match against Saurashtra at Hyderabad from October 13 to 16.
