Purple Squirrel were crowned champions in the 2nd Odisha Snooker Premier League (OSPL), beating defending champions Baize Rulers 3-2 in the exciting final at Vintage Club here today. Subrat Das was the most impressive performer for Purple Squirrel, remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. However, Chirag Arora of Baize Rulers was adjudged man of the tournament.
The tournament was organised by Vintage Club with Mahavir Group of Institutions as the sponsors. Each of the four franchise-based teams was consisted of five players, one more than last year. Maximum budget for purchase of players was Rs 50,000 per team. Earlier on May 1, Nishant Biswal became the costliest cueist for the second edition of OSPL as he was bought by Blue Hawks for Rs 22,000 during players’ auction at Hotel Crown here.
Purple Squirrel won all of their three matches to qualify directly for the finals. Defending champions Baize Rulers and Blue Hawks finished second and third with two and one win respectively in the league stage. Baize Rulers beat Blue Hawks in the eliminator 3-2 to set up the title clash with Purple Squirrel.
Rising Kings, the fourth team in the fray, crashed out in the league stage, losing all of their three matches. Ashutosh Padhy, the lone international cueist of the state, won all three of his matches for Rising Kings, but could not carry his team to the next level. He, of course, achieved the distinction of scoring the highest break of 84 in the tournament. Rising Kings joined the tournament as a new team, replacing Q-ing Saddles.
