Gusain wins Triple-C All-India Open chess title

Himal Gusain of Chandigarh emerged champion in the 2nd Triple `C’ All-India FIDE Rating Open Chess Tournament, which concluded at Hotel Rumani in Puri today. He gathered eight points out of a possible nine to take home the top prize of Rs 50,000.

Haryana IM Himanshu Sharma finished runner-up with 7.5 points and received a cash prize of Rs 30,000. The third prize of Rs 20,000 was claimed by Abhshek Das (7.5 points) of Jharkhand. Among Odia players, Air India IM Swayams Mishra was most successful, occupying fourth position with seven points.  He became richer by Rs 15,000.

A total of 236 players from 16 states participated in the five-day tournament, which was organised by Triple `C’ Chess Club, in association with District Chess Association of Puri (DCAP). There were eight International Masters, one Women Grand Master and one FIDE Master in the fray. The tournament carried a total prize fund Rs 5,05,050.

Puri ADM Uddhab Charan Majhi graced the valedictory ceremony as chief guest and handed over the prizes. Hotel Rumani proprietor Rabi Narayan Samantaray, Triple ‘C’ Chess Club president Kamalakanta Bisoi, DCAP secretary Subhash Chandra Sahoo, All Odisha Chess Association joint secretary Manoj Kumar Panigrahi and chief arbiter Suresh Chandra Sahoo were present on the occasion.
