Cuttack-A emerged champions in the Under-19 Inter-District Cricket Tournament by virtue of taking first innings lead against Bhubaneswar-A in the rain-marred three-day final match, which ended in a draw here at Barabati Stadium today. In reply to a modest first-innings total of 240 by Bhubaneswar-A, Cuttack-A were 302 for seven at stumps on the final day.
Champion Cuttack A received a cash award of Rs 15,000 and runners-up Bhubaneswar-A Rs 10,000. Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) treasurer Satya Mohanty and joint-secretary Sanjib Kumar Dutta graced the presentation ceremony as chief guest and guest of honour respectively. OCA U-19 coach Rashmi Ranjan Parida, OCA junior selectors Shovan Deb, Deepak Mangraj, Subash Chandra Mohanty, Biswabharati Cricket Club treasurer Sushanta Mohanty and OCA chief co-ordinator Daniel Rout were present on the occasion.
In the semifinals, Bhubaneswar-A came from behind to beat Balasore by five wickets, while Cuttack-A qualified for the final by taking first-innings against Jajpur in the other semifinal, which ended in a draw.
Cuttack-A and Balasore registered outright wins in their quarterfinal matches against Rourkela and Sundargarh respectively. Bhubaneswar-A and Jajpur booked berths in the last-four stage by taking first-innings lead against Bolangir and Cuttack-B respectively in the other quarterfinal matches, wich ended in draws. Satyajit Sabat cornered glory for Bhubaneswar-A, scoring a century in both the innings of their quarterfinal match.
Earlier, Cuttack-A, Bhubaneswar-A, Sundargarh and Jajpur from Group-A; Cuttack-B, Balasore and Rourkela from Group-B and Bolangir from Group-C booked berths in quarterfinals. Cuttack-A emeged Group A-I toppers with 20 points, winning all five of their league matches, while Sundargarh finished second with 16 points from four wins. Bhubaneswar-A topped Group A-II with 20 points from five wins, while Jajpur came second with 14 points from three wins and one tied result.
Cuttack-B and Balasore secure the other two quarterfinal berths from Group-B by winning all five of their league matches. Cuttack-B topped Group B-I with 20 points, while Balasore emerged Group B-II winners also with 20 points. Rourkela beat Puri in the Group-B qualifying match by 19 runs today to capture the last quarterfinal ticket
Bolangir reached the last-eight stage, beating Kalahandi by seven wickets in their qualifying match. The tournament is being conducted by Odisha Cricket Association at different grounds in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar from March 30.
