Second-innings haul of seven wickets for 19 runs by pace bowler Ashok Dinda powered host Bengal to a 133-run win over Odisha in their Group A Ranji Trophy match, which ended in less than two days at Bengal Cricket Academy Ground in Kolkata today. The win fetched Bengal six points, while Odisha drew blank.
Chasing 171 for victory, Odisha were skittled out for a meager 37 in 19.2 overs as none of the 11 batsmen was able to reach double figure. This was second lowest team total for Odisha in first-class cricket, the lowest being 35 against Bihar at Gandhi Maidan, Patna in 1958-59. But against Bengal, this was the lowest total by Odisha, the previous lowest being 51, which was recorded at Eden Gardens, Calcutta in 1970-71.
The track at Bengal Cricket Academy Ground proved to be a graveyard for batsmen as 40 wickets fell within two days. Electing to bat, Bengal were bundled out for 142. Opener A Eswaran waged a lone battle for the home team, hitting a 156-ball 88. Left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh was most successful Odisha bowler, bagging five wickets for 58 runs. He was well supported by pacer Suryakant Pradhan, who picked up three wickets for 15 runs.
But Odisha squandered the fine performance of their bowlers by getting all out for 107 and conceding a lead of 35 runs. Only four batsmen could reach the double figure. Aamir Gani was the wrecker-in-chief of the Odisha innings, scalping six wickets for 34 runs, while Pragyan Ojha and Anurag Tiwari picked up a brace each.
In the second innings, Bengal were bowled out for 135 with Easwaran, Sudeep Chatterjee and captain Manoj Tiwary making notable contributions. Odisha pace spearhead Basant Mohanty was most successful bowler in the second innings, taking five wickets for 16 runs.
