Defending champions Karnataka beat Odisha by an innings and 64 runs on the fourth and last day of their Group A Ranji Trophy matc at SDNRW Ground in Mysuru today. After conceding first-innings lead of 168 runs, Odisha folded up for 104 in the second innings. This was the first defeat for Odisha in five matches and they stayed at seventh position in the group table with nine points. They will next meet Haryana at Lahli from November 15 to 18.
Earlier, career-best 153 (230b, 15x4, 1x6) by vice-captain Govind Poddar and useful 40 by Pratik Das helped Odisha make a respectable first-innings total of 232. Odisha were in deep trouble, losing four wickets for 73 runs. But Poddar and Das rescued the team with 93-run stand for the fifth wicket.
The magnificent knock of Poddar was his fourth first-class century and third of the season, following an unbeaten 148 against Vidarbha and 100 against Maharashtra. He also completed 2000 first-class runs in the process.
In reply, host Karnataka rode on a century by India discard Robin Uthappa (148 off 257b, 11x4, 2x6) and a half-century apice by Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair to declare at 400 for nine. For Odisha, Suryakant Pradhan and Dhiraj Singh captured three wickets each, while Basant Mohanty picked up a brace.
In the second innings, Anurag Sarangi was the top scorer with 44 runs. Only three batsmen managed to reach double figure, while four failed to open their account. India medium-pacer Stuart Binny rocked the Odisha second innings, taking four wickets for 34 runs. He had the opportunity to take a hat-trick on two occasions, but squandered both of it. Middle-order batsman Ranjit Singh and off-spinner Amit Das (both from Rourkela) made their first-class debut for Odisha in this match.
