SJFI allots 38th National Convention to Odisha

The 38th National Convention of Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) was held at Ahmedabad from May 30 to June 3. Over 80 sports journalists from different parts of the country participated in the event, which featured competition in cricket, table tennis, basketball, football, golf and badminton.

The executive committee of SJFI formally allotted the hosting right of the 39th National Convention 2016 to Odisha Sports Journalists Association (OSJA). It was decided to stage the 39th National Convention before the start of the 2016 Ranji Trophy season. OSJA was also given a special award at the closing function of the National Convention, held at Hotel Metropole.

Sambit Mohapatra, Umakant Mishra, Gyana Ranjan Mishra, Abdul Ajiz and Fazal Ali represented OSJA in the National Convention. Abdul Ajiz and Fazal Ali helped East Zone finish runners-up in the J K Bose Trophy Cricket Tournament.

East Zone beat North Zone and South Zone but lost to West Zone. Ajiz was adjudged man of the match against South Zone. OSJA team, comprising Ajiz, Ali and Gyana Ranjan Mishra reached the semifinals in football shooting. Odisha also reached the last-four stage in basketball free throw competition.

Round 1: North Zone
76 all out, 19.1 overs (Chandrashekar L. 23, Parwinder Sharda 15, Kharram Habib 15*; Alapan Saha 3/9, Tauhid Talukdar 3/7, Anirban Deb 2/10) lost to East Zone 77 for 1 wicket (Kausav Baruhh 31, Tauhid Talukdar 33) by 9 wickets.

Round 2: South Zone
94 for 8, 20 overs (Shashank Kishore 33 not out, Satish Viswanath 20, Tauhid Ali 2/14, Abdul Aziz 1/12, Tirthakumar 1/12, Alapan Saha 1/17, Abhishek Sengupta 1/18) lost to East Zone 96/3, 12 overs (Abdul Aziz 39 not out, Tauhid Ali 15, Alapan Saha 14 not out, Shiva Krishna 2/22, Viji Vijeth 1/7) by 7 wickets.

Round 3: West Zone
137 for four in 20 overs ( Ripple Christy 63, Devendra Pandey 41) beat East Zone 79 for eight in 20 overs (Taus Rizvi three for eight) by 58 runs.
