Hosts Gujarat crushed Odisha by an innings and 109 runs with two days to spare in their four-day C K Nayudu Trophy Elite Group B match at Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad today. This was the third innings defeat in four matches for the hapless Odisha team, which ended it league engagements with just one point. Odisha suffered their earlier two innings defeats against Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
Put into bat by Gujarat captain Piyush Tanwar, Odisha crumbled like a pack of cards and were skittled out for 87. Only three batsmen were able to reach double figures. Medium-pacer Santosh Shinde single-handedly destroyed the Odisha innings, capturing seven wickets for 34 runs.
In reply, Gujarat rode on a half-century each by openers A Pathan and Poojan Patel to make 250. After conceding a lead of 163 runs, Odisha made a meek surrender by folding for 54 in the second essay. Barring captain Pratik Das, who scored 23, none of the Odisha batsmen could reach double figures. Gujarat medium-pacer Santosh Shinde, who scalped seven wickets in the first innings, picked up three more in the second to finish with a match haul of 10 for 38. G Gaja caused maximum damage to the Odisha second innings, scalping five wickets for 21 runs. The win fetched Gujarat seven points, while Odisha drew blank.
