Temple City Bhubaneswar proved itself as a magnificent new home for hockey by staging the 35th Men’s Champions Trophy Tournament very successfully at Kalinga Stadium Hockey Complex from December 6 to 14. Germany won lifted the glittering silver trophy for the 10th time with a convincing 2-0 win over three-time title winners Pakistan in the thrilling summit clash. A field goal each by Christopher Wesley and Florian Fuchs enabled Germany regain the glittering trophy after a gap of seven years.
INDIA FINISH FOURTH: Hosts India’s last hope for podium finish went in smoke as they lost to defending champions Australia 1-2 in the last classification match. Australia finished third, while India, who were dreaming to win their maiden crown, eventually contended themselves with the fourth place.
NETHERLANDS FIFTH: Eight-time champions Netherlands finished fifth with thumping 4-1 win over Argentina, who settled with sixth place. England occupied the seventh position, edging out Belgium 3-2.
Belgium finished last.
INDIA LOSE IN SEMIFINALS: Earlier in the semifinals, a nervous-looking India lost to a buoyant Pakistan 3-4 to a Pakistan, while Germany edged out defending champions Australia 3-2. Pakistan’s fighting win, however, lost much of its sheen as some of the Pak players showing indecent gesture to the crowd, while celebrating their victory. Even Pak team’s head coach Shahnaz Sheikh had a heated exchange of words with reporters and walked out of the post-match press conference in a huff.
