Odisha qualified for the knock-out stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy Cricket Tournament despite losingĀ their fourth and last East Zone league match by 45 runs against Jharkhand at Jadavpur University ground in Kolkata today.
Host Bengal beat Assam by 18 runs in another league game at Eden Gardens to emerge zonal champions with full 16 points. Odisha, Jharkhand and Assam tied for the second spot with eight points apiece. But by virtue of better net run rate, Odisha (NRR +0.237) finished second, while Assam (NRR -0.244) and Jharkhand (NRR -0.285) settled as third and fourth respectively.
Put into bat, Jharkhand rode on a half-century each by Kumar Deobrat (73) and Virat Singh (67) to compile a healthy total of 280 for five. In reply, Odisha folded up for 235 despite a captain`s knock of 61 (79b, 9x4) by Biplab Samantray and a maiden half-century (50 off 33b, 8x4) by Abhilash Mallick.
Among other notable performers for Odisha, Arabind Singh scored 40, while allrounder Paresh Patel picked up three wickets and followed it with a 30-ball knock of 27.
