Odisha gained three points by virtue of taking a 35-run first-innings lead against Maharashtra in their three-day match of the Bhausaheb Nimbalkar Trophy All-India Cricket Tournament that ended in a draw at Poona Club ground in Pune today.
A six-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh helped Odisha dismiss Maharashtra for 135 in the first innings. Had it not been a belligerent 73 by Vilay Zol, Maharashra would not have been able to put up a three-figure total. Dhiraj received ideal support from part-time offie Lagnajit Samal, who picked up three wickets.
In reply, Odisha made 177 to take the crucial first innings lead. Maharashtra left-arm spinner Akshay Darekar rocked the Odisha batting line-up, bagging seven wickets for 67 runs. After conceding the lead, Maharashtra rode on Sangram Atitkar`s 161-ball 116 and Rohit Motwani`s 139-ball 88 to declare their second innings at 269 for four.
Needing 235 for an outright win, Odisha reached 96 for one when both the captains decided to end the match as draw. After the cheap dismissal of opener Girija Rout, Anurag Sarangi and Ranjit Singh remained unbeaten on 45 and 34 respectively. Maharashtra settled with one point.
