Hockey Gangpur win sub-junior men National title

New entrants Hockey Gangpur-Odisha emerged champions 4th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men National Championship (Division B), trouncing Delhi 5-2 in the final at Vadodara in Gujarat earlier on Sunday.

Sanjay Xalxo scored a brace, while Pratap Lakra, Anand Ekka and Biraj Topno contributed one goal each for the champion side. Mohit Anand scored both the goals for Delhi. Earlier in the semifinals, Gangpur boys edged out Sports Authority of India by a solitary goal, which was struck by Pratap Lakra.

Gangpur qualified for the semifinals, winning all three of their Pool C league matches by big margin. They got off to a flying start, hammering Uttarakhand 12-1 and finished the pool engagement in style, routing Goa 13-1. In between, they blanked Bengal 5-0.

After getting Hockey India`s associate membership last year in September, Hockey Gangpur-Odisha has proved itself a force to reckon with in the domestic circuit, winning two national titles within a period of three months.
The new state body made history by winning the title in the 4th Hockey India Senior Men National Championship (Division B) at Lucknow earlier this year on March 13.

Hockey Gangpur-Odisha beat Hockey Uttarakhand 12-1.
May 11: Hockey Gangpur-Odisha (Sibren Lakra 5th, 42nd, 66th; Sudhir Ekka 7th; Biraj Topno 20th) beat Hockey Bengal Hockey Association 5-0.
May 13: Hockey Gangpur-Odisha beat Goans Hockey 13-1.
May 17 (Semifinals): Hockey Gangpur-Odisha (Pratap Lakra 42nd) beat Sports Authority 1-0.
May 18 (Final): Hockey Gangpur-Odisha (Sanjay Xalxo 13th, Pratap Lakra 37th, Sanjay Xalxo 45th, Anand Ekka 54th, Biraj Topno 66th) beat Delhi (Mohit Anand  44th, 58th) 5-2.
