The Saroj Mahasuara Memorial Award for year 2013 was conferred on international woman cricketer Rasanara Parbin and veteran umpire Parasar Biswal today. Ekamra MLA Ashok Chandra Panda presented the award in a simple function here at Town Club (Old Town).
Twenty-one-year-old Parbin, who represented India in Women`s T20 World Cup, T20 Asia Cup last year and Women`s World Cup this year, received the award as the up-coming cricketer, while 55-year-old Biswal, who belongs to Jangala village of Sundargarh district, bagged it as the best umpire.
Former India Test opener Shiv Sundar Das, ex-India woman football captain Sradhanjali Samantaray, eminent cricket coach Kishore Mania and Saroj Mahasuara Memorial Committee convener Manoj Mohapatra were present on the occasion.
The cricketer award was instituted in the year 2004 as a tribute to local umpire Saroj Mahasuara, who died in a road accident in 2002. The best umpire award was added in the year 2009.
