World Youth Athletics: Dutee qualifies for 100m final

Promising sprinter Dutee Chand today sprang a surprise for India in the World Youth Athletics Championship by qualifying for the girls` 100m final at Donetsk in Ukraine today. The 17-year-old Odisha athlete, who had made a medal-winning international debut by securing the 200m bronze in the just-concluded Asian Athletics Championships in Pune, clocked 11.72 secs to finish third in the semifinals heat number three.

The first two in each of the three semifinal heats and the next two fastest qualify for the finals. Dutee, a product of Bhubaneswar-based Government Sports Hostel, qualified for the final as one of the two fastest on the second day of the World meet.

She had clocked her personal best of 11.62 secs -- National youth and junior records -- in the first round heats yesterday. Dutee is also set to compete in the 200m sprint.
