Commanding performance by pace bowlers and middle-order batsmen powered Orissa to a nine-wicket win over Punjab on the last day their four-day Ranji Trophy Group-A Super League match at the East Coast Railway ground here today.
Basant Mohanty took career-best seven wickets for 27 runs as Orissa skittled out Punjab for 60 in the first innings. The home team then rode on an unbeaten century by Pravanjan Mullick and a half-century each by Haladhar Das, Niranjan Behera and Subit Biswal to compile a healthy total of 352.
After conceding a first innings lead of 292 runs, Punjab fought back to make 378 in the second innings, thanks to a century by A Kakkar and a half-century by K Goel. Debasis Mohanty claimed five wickets for Orissa. Needing 87 runs for victory, the hosts romped home, losing one wicket in the process.
Orissa skipper S S Das completed 10,000 first-class runs and Niranjan Behera 1,500 in this match. Orissa gained five points, while Punjab drew blank
