Khurda clinched a double as Sambit Panda and Samparnna Hota won titles in open and girls categories respectively in the Odisha State Under-9 Chess Championship, which concluded at at Kalinga Bharati Residential College, Pira Bazaar (Cuttack) today.
In the seven-round tournament, National under-7 champion Sambit won all his games to finish with full seven points, while disctict-mate Soumein Rajdev settled as runner-up with six points. In the girls’ category, Samparnna topped the table with six points, followed by Aditi Mohanty (Cuttack), who ended runner-up also with six points.
Altogether 152 players, including 40 girls joined the seven-round State U-9 Chess Championship, which was organised by S R Chess Centre, under the aegis of All Odisha Chess Association.
The title winners received a cash prize of Rs 1,500 each. Top two finishers in each category qualified to represent Odisha in the National U-9 Championship, scheduled to be held in Tamil Nadu from September 1 to 11.
