Birsa Munda Bidyapitha asserted supremacy in the Hero Honda All-Orissa School Hockey Tournament with their A and B teams finishing one-two at Kalinga Stadium here today. In the hard-fought final, the Rourkela school’s A team beat their B side 2-1. Arvin Barla scored both the goals for the winners, while Suman Tirkey reduced the margin for the runners-up with a stinging goal in the 58th minute.
The three-day tournament, featuring 12 school teams was organised by Dilip Tirkey Sports Research and Development Foundation. Earlier in the semifinals, Birsa Munda A crushed Ekalabya High School, Kansbahal 6-0, while Birsa Munda B edged past Tulasipur High School, Cuttack 4-3 via sudden-death tie-breaker.
Former India captain Dilip Tirkey and Hero Honda senior area sales manager Manav Mehera gave away the trophy and prizes at the closing function. Ausem Lakra (Tulasipur High School), Amardeep Ekka (Birsa Munda A) and Pradeep Kujur (Birsa Munda B) were adjudged the player of the tournament, highest scorer and best goalkeepre respectively. Highest capped hockey international Dilip Tirkey, former Orissa hockey captain Surendra Barla and goalkeeper Rajesh Dung Dung were felicitated on the occasion.
