Utkal University achieved a notable success by finishing runners-up in the East Zone Inter-University Table Tennis Championships, which was hosted by Viswabharati Sports Board, Santiniketan at Kabiguru Kridangan, Bolpur (West Bengal) from January 14 to 16. With this success, Utkal qualified to participate in the All-India Inter-University Table Tennis Championship to be held RTM University, Nagpur (Maharastra) from January 20.
The five-member Utkal team, comprising Tausif Haque, Muhammed Azhar, Tohid Haque (all Bahugram College); Anis Das (Trident College, Bhubaneswar) and A Sikar Choudhury (SCB Medical College, Cuttack), occupied the second position in the league round, beating Bardhawan University (WB) 3-1, Visvabharati University 3-2 and going down to eventual champions Calcutta University 2-3.
Earlier in the knock-round round, Utkal won four matches in a row to emerge toppers in Group `B`. They beat L N Mithila University (Darbhanga, Bihar) 3-0; Jadavpur University 3-1, West Bengal University of Technology (Kolkata) 3-0 and North Bengal University (Siliguri) 3-1.
