Orissa finish 17th with 12 medals in 34th National Games

An 181-member Orissa squad, comprising 145 athletes finished 17th, bagging 12 medals in the 34th National Games, which was held at Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad in Jharkhand from February 12 to 26, 2011. The medals included five gold, four silver and three bronze.
Swimmers Virdhawal Khade and Richa Mishra were adjudged the best male and female athletes while Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), who topped the charts with 162 medals including 70 gold, were given the Raja Bhalendra Trophy for Champions team in the 34th National Games that concluded today.
A special award of best State was also given to Manipur who finished second with a haul of 48 gold, 37 silver and 33 bronze medals. Haryana occupied the third place with a total of 115 medals including 42 gold, 33 silver, 40 bronze.

Following are the performance report of the Orissa squad.

ATHLETICS: Subhasmita Rath finished eighth in women`s 20km walking and Dharmedhar Mahanta satisfied himself with fifth position in men`s 110m hurdles, clocking 14.68 seconds. Purnima Hembram finished sixth in women`s heptathlon with 4368 points.
CANOEING-KAYAKING: Seem Dungdung bagged a silver in 1,000m K-I event and a bronze in 200m K-I event.
