OOA names 181-member contingent for National Games

Orissa Olympic Association (OOA) today announced the names of a 181-member contingent, including 145 sportspersons and 36 officials for participation in the 34th National Games to be held at Ranchi and Jamshedpur in Jharakhand from February 12 to 26.

Orissa would compete in 16 disciplines (athletics, boxing, canoeing-kayaking, cycling, football (woman), gymnastic, hockey (men and woman), karate, rowing, rugby 7s, sepak takraw (woman), shooting, swimming, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.

Missing from the list are National record holding woman hurdler Anuradha Biswal, sprinter Amiya Mallick, Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold medallist K Ravi Kumar, former India hockey captain Prabodh Tirkey. While Biswal opted out on personal ground, Mallick is believed to be recovering from injury. But media report said Tirkey would play for Jharkhand.

OOA secretary Asirbad Behera expressed hope that this contingent would better the number of medals won by their predecessors in the previous Games at Guwahati in 2007. ``In the last National Games, Orissa bagged 15 medals, including five gold, two silver and eight bronze. This time we are expecting 20 to 25 medas. Our gold medal chances are bright in athletics, women football, women hockey, karate, canoeing-kayaking, rowing and weightlifting,`` he said.

In order to encourage sportspersons to put up their best performance, OOA also announced cash prizes for medallists and coaches. Prizes include Rs 50,000 for gold, Rs 30,000 for silver and Rs 20,000 for bronze.
